With 4th of July just around the corner, you have to think about fireworks and your dog. Do you know how to prepare your dog for the loud noises to come?
Many dogs are afraid of the noise that fireworks make, and for good reason. If you’ve never heard the loud thunder of fire works you’d be surprised and a little on edge, too. Dogs have natural instisncts to survive, and being afraid and running away plays a major role. However, there are many ways that you can teach your dog to be comfortable with fireworks.
First, you want to provide your dog with excersize so that he is tired and his body is more relaxed when fireworks occur.
Second, if you’re home you want to provide your dog with a safe location, like his crate, and provide him with self entertainment activities such as filling up his rubber toy with peanut butter. This way, when the fireworks start, your pup will be busy chewing on his toy making a positive association.
Third, if you and your dog will not be home, be sure to bring treats to reward your dog when the fireworks begin. You want to reward your dog being calm or paying attention to you. The more you reward your dog for not reacting, the more he will not fear the fireworks in the future.
